‘Leverage the strength that you have: that no one else can be you.’ - Todd Wheatland
Every application form I’ve ever looked at has always asked me this question: ‘What are your strengths?’ For months and months, I’ve pondered the soul of this question, because I’ve never been confronted with my strengths or my weaknesses. I never knew the importance of them until I noticed the people around me. Every person around me had a different set of capabilities and was able to manipulate them to make them the best version of themselves. It was absolutely beautiful to examine.
So what are your strengths? Strengths can be anything that you are naturally able to excel at. You can be good at learning languages, leading teams or communicating efficiently. Many people are unable to figure out their skills because they had no idea how to connect their everyday work to skills demanded by the workplace:
Waking up and making the bed immediately. Whilst this seems like a small basic task, it shows organizational skills and dedication.
Exercising. This establishes the skill of being able to push yourself to your limits and being dedicated.
Cooking. This shows the ability to think creatively or even the ability to follow instructions to a par.
Your strengths are everywhere. You just have to look for them.
What if you know your strengths? How do they help?
If you know your strengths, then you know your weaknesses. Your comprehension of yourself can help you determine the best tasks for yourself in the workplace. Perhaps, you’re a good speaker, but are unable to make presentations as well: this can help you determine that the best assignments for you are something like customer service.
What if I cannot choose my tasks?
You may get assignments that you feel take advantage of your weaknesses. However, there is no reason to panic. Try to still bring in your skills so that you are still able to do a wonderful job while being happy. Perhaps, you’re really good at organizing, so you can try to break up your assignment into smaller tasks. The ability to leverage your strengths is always available even during your weaknesses.
The point is that knowing your strengths and weaknesses can help you move forward in your workplace as you choose tasks best suited for you as well as tasks that help you improve and develop your strengths, whilst encouraging you to work on your weaknesses.
You have to leverage your strengths to be able to become the best version of yourself and the most efficient employee or employer in a company. This will help open up a cove of new opportunities to further your career and develop your abilities. Do not restrict your ability to grow by sticking to menial tasks that don’t make you happy or don’t make full use of all your strengths.
And remember, your uniqueness is the biggest strength out there!
