What best can you do for women when it comes to gender equality?

“When women support each other incredible things happen”.

I would like to start this blog with gratitude for the shift in the minds of people across various sectors. There is a growing consciousness among people regarding gender equality and a lot is being done to help women secure positions equal to her male counterpart.

But there is more to be done. What best can you do for women when it comes to gender equality? You can do a lot!

1. Support Her at Your Workplace

There are instances when for a project a male colleague is selected over a female in spite of her competencies. Or there can be instances where a female counterpart is being paid a smaller salary cheque for the same work. Do not watch such occurrences passively. These are occasions when you can stand for your female colleague and support her.  Your words have the power to bring change!

2. Encourage, Motivate, Appreciate

Motivate and boosts their confidence in themselves and their work. Ensure that their opinions matter and encourage them to voice their views. You can make them realize their strength through words of appreciation. Further, accept them for their authentic self, without imposing rules to change the way they walk, talk, or behave.

3. Curb Negativity

With the media having elevated women to a position where beauty holds a prime position, women are exposed to bullying and negative remarks very often, be it online, at their workplace or anywhere they go. Take a stand against such prejudices and directly stop people from body shaming or criticizing women for wrong reasons. Further, promote their knowledge, skills and positivity.

4. Know the Women at Your Workplace

There is a story behind every woman you see at her desk. Try to understand them and listen to their amazing stories. This will boost their morale, and at the same time, if you can share those stories with other women they, in turn, will be motivated and inspired.

5. Be A Role Model

If you are a woman, be a role model for other women. Stand up for your and other women’s rights, voice your opinions strongly, nib negativity at its very root and support women in being who they are. This can greatly impact women at your workplace. At the same time, know your own worth and never step back from what is right.

Other Ways to Support Women

You can also help women by creating  a culture of recruiting more women at your workplace, supporting new mothers with maternity leaves and time to refresh, provide day care services for their little ones, provide business opportunities to women, support organizations that work for women’s upliftment, invest in higher education or training for women, and more.

Through small steps, you can bring about a major shift at your workplace and the society at large in the way women are treated. We are part of this change that society needs for a better future.
