Is Our Education System Effective?

Aarav doesn’t know how to create a resumé. But, at least he knows that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!

Aarav doesn’t know how to calculate income tax. But, at least he knows that a2 + b2 = c2.

Aarav doesn’t know how to develop his thinking skills. But, at least he knows all the important quotes from Macbeth.

Aarav doesn’t know how to lead a team. But, at least he knows the equation to calculate kinetic energy.

Schools were first created to train students for becoming individual creative thinkers and work in good jobs. However, since then, there is no doubt that schools have strayed far away from their original mission. Schools have taught students how to memorize something, write an exam on it and then forget about it completely.

Schools are meant to be intermediaries in a child’s life where they learn all the skills they need for a job. But, they are stealing the most crucial years in a person’s life to teach them the most superfluous skill - to mug up.

According to research, around 56% of students are leaving schooling to find out that they know nothing about real life, including the job market. Schools, for twelve years, have taught students that everything they need to know is in a book. But once these easily brainwashed students go out into the world, it is clearer than ever that this is not the case. They don’t have answers in a book and they have not learned any of the necessary skills needed in the job market - i.e. leadership, management, critical thinking skills.

Schools need to provide more resources to their students. While subjects are important in developing their brain power, encouraging students to memorize information and recite it at a set time and date isn’t beneficial. Students need to learn life skills and industry-oriented skills.  They need to learn skills to aid them for the real world.

Students need guidance, and it rests in the hands of their schools.
