Ethics and Morality - Job Seekers Cannot Overlook

“No man is a man without high morals and ethics” - Mehmet Murat Ildan

Your ethics and morality are enough to give a peek into your character. This holds true in every sphere of life including your interactions with your recruiters.  When it comes to your job hunt, you not only need to be honest to yourself but to your recruiters too.

At times situations may arise that prod you to choose between something you long awaited for and your ethics and morality. These are times of trail that reveal your actual character. To be true to your inner self and keep your head held high in the long run the only way is to never compromise on your ethics. Every waking moment learn to give priority to your ethics and do what is right so that you never regret as Martin Luther said, “The time is always right to do what is right”

An Honest Resume

When you craft your resume make sure you are honestly representing your experiences and talent.  In a competitive environment, with innumerable candidates neck-and-neck with you, it can get tempting to hide facts or manipulate them to make things favourable for yourself. But do not behave in a surreptitious manner when it comes to sharing your information.

Deception of any kind or providing misleading data could be an easy access to your desired job; but the chances of being caught are nevertheless equally same. Whether it is providing wrong credentials and references or narrating a wrong chronology and experience, everything can ultimately draw you towards an unfavourable consequence.

Begin with an open and clear discussion regarding your expectations, all your skills and career moves with your recruiter. This will help them to understand your requirements and also allow them to represent you better before a prospective employer.

Refrain from dishonest traits because “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do” –Elvis Presley. It is ultimately your honesty and diligently acquired skills that will help you climb up the ladder.

Renege on an Offer

“There is something very wrong with your character if opportunity controls your loyalty” -   Sean Simmons

It is saddening to witness many candidates are unable to keep their word after accepting an offer just because they find a more lucrative option. They jump from one interview to another weighting the packages offered to select the best out of the lot. They keep their eyes glued to what is profitable for them and rejecting an offer after accepting does not matter to them.

However, this seriously affects the service credibility of the head hunters who are answerable to the employers. The recruiters go all the way to pitch for these candidates in companies they show interest. Unfortunately, the candidates often walk away without a trace of guilt or regret for having put the recruiters through a difficult situation. This not just spoils their image before the employers and recruiters, many companies even blacklist such candidates.

“No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all. Integrity is Everything”

These are small instances that go a long way to portray who you are and determine your character. Hold on to your word once you accept an offer even if another company wants to pay you a higher package. Surely the second company will respect your decision and look up to you for your ethics and sincerity. You never know the same company may heir you for a better position in future.

“Doing the right thing doesn’t automatically bring success. But compromising ethics almost always leads to failure  ”

Once you accept an offer be committed to it and avoid attending other interviews.  But do take time to decide on whether you wish to take up the offer. Do not be in haste or be pressurized to accept the offer because rejecting it later would be ethically wrong.

Skipping Interviews

You come up with an emergency or get unwell just on the day of your interview. What do you do next? There are candidates who take it for granted that the recruiters and the employer will manage the situation; and they simply forget about the interview till the recruiters start following up on them.  Nothing can be more distressing than such irresponsible behaviour.

The recruiters and employers have invested their time and money on you. So make sure to inform the recruiters well in advance that you cannot attend the interview. Instead of sending a text message call them up since they may not check their message box. Share your concern and get the interview rescheduled.

Further, make sure you apply for positions that genuinely interest you. In case a position that seemed interesting when you applied for it no longer attracts you, explain the same to your recruiters. But do not abstain yourself from the interview without prior notice. It puts both the employer and the recruiter in a difficult position, and it is a waste of their valuable time.
